KBEM is featuring Nyttu Chongo the week of July 15th for the Minnesota Music Profiles series. You can hear Nyttu live this week on KBEM (88.5FM, Minneapolis, www.jazz88.fm). Monday July 15, 2024 – 8:20PM, Thursday – 11:20AM and 6:20PM on KBEM.
Nyttu Chongo is a Mozambican-Minnesotan who composes and performs a style of music called Bantu Jazz. The style combines music played on African instruments with western classical instruments. Nyttu Chongo’s ensemble is performing on Friday July 26th at 7:30PM at the Ordway. In a conversation with Phil Nusbaum, Nyttu talked about many facets of his music, including his method of composing.

Tickets are still available for my upcoming show, Phulani, at the Ordway in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This performance is about connections between people, places, and our ancestors through the language of music.
This series of original works played by myself on Mbira Dzava Dzimu, Mbira Nyunga Nyunga, and Kora will be accompanied by Cello, Violin, Viola, and Voice. Phulani means “Open.” By this, my wish is for open minds, open hands, and open hearts. Openness to others and openness to our inner selves. Composed through a uniquely African style of improvisation, I aim to explore the threads, rhythms, and sounds that bind us to each other. This performance is made possible in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Tickets can be purchased here.
